Trafic, Vivaro, Talento and NV300

From 2014 the Renault Trafic has been sold as the Vauxhall Vivaro (to 2019), the Fiat Talento and the Nissan NV300. All are the same van and the glass is interchangeable.

This is the single most useful thing to know when converting one. The Vivaro badge in particular has an enormous UK following, so if you're searching for build guides, layout ideas or second-hand parts, look under Vivaro as well as Trafic — you'll find several times more material, and all of it applies.

When buying, compare prices across all four badges. Talentos and NV300s in particular tend to sell below equivalent Trafics and Vivaros for no structural reason whatsoever.

Planning a Trafic conversion

The classic Trafic layout is a rock-and-roll bed or fixed bed across the back, kitchen along the nearside, and storage above. That puts your cooking area right by the sliding door, which is why an opening window on the nearside is close to standard practice — steam and cooking smells need somewhere to go, and the alternative is opening the whole sliding door in the rain.

Fixed glass on the offside gives you light without the extra cost and complication. Rear door glass is worth adding: it transforms rearward visibility and stops the bed area feeling enclosed.

Privacy tint throughout. The Trafic wears dark glass well and it keeps a conversion — which represents a lot of money in the back of a van — out of sight when parked.

Note that the standard roof gives sitting height only. Plenty of Trafic builds add a pop-top, which doesn't change the glazing plan but does change the van considerably.

Fitting

Bonded glazing with polyurethane adhesive, as Renault glazes the window-van versions on the line. Mark and cut the aperture, dress and prime the raw edge against corrosion, apply adhesive, set the glass square, cure fully before driving.

The Trafic's side panels have well-defined pressed guidelines that make marking out considerably less nerve-wracking than on vans without them. Panes are a manageable size — the side glass is a comfortable one-person fit, the door glass easier with help.
