Primastar, Trafic and Vivaro — one van, three badges

The 2001–2013 Primastar, Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro are structurally identical and share glass completely.

This matters more on this van than most, because the Trafic and Vivaro have an enormous conversion following. There are hundreds of build threads, layout guides and video walkthroughs out there — almost all of them filed under Trafic or Vivaro. If you own a Primastar, all of that content applies to your van directly. Search under the other names and you'll find everything you need.

Buying-wise, Primastars often sell for less than equivalent Vivaros purely on badge recognition, which makes them something of a bargain for converters who know they're the same vehicle.

Twin side-load doors

Several panes on this van are specific to vans with sliding doors on both sides. The offside panel arrangement is different on twin-door vans and standard glass won't fit.

Choosing your glazing

The Primastar's proportions suit a two-person camper very well — low enough to park normally, long enough in LWB form for a transverse bed if you're not especially tall.

The standard approach: opening glass on the nearside front for ventilation over the kitchen, fixed opposite, rear side glass for light over the bed, and back door glass if you want the rear to feel open. Rear glass is SWB/LWB-specific, so confirm your wheelbase.

Privacy tint for a camper build; green for day vans and crew vans.

Fitting

Bonded glazing with polyurethane adhesive: cut, dress and prime the aperture edge, bond, cure. The Primastar's side panels have clear pressed guidelines that make marking out considerably easier.

Bear in mind these vans are now 12–25 years old. Check panel condition around the aperture before cutting, and prime the cut edge thoroughly — corrosion is the main enemy on vans of this vintage.
