Planning a 2016 Vito conversion

The modern Vito suits a particular kind of build: discreet, well-finished, and usable as an everyday vehicle. That shapes the glazing decisions.

Most builders on this van fit an opening pane on the nearside — the sliding door side, where cooking happens — and fixed glass on the offside. Adding rear door glass is worth doing; it dramatically improves rearward visibility and stops the back of the van feeling like a cave.

Privacy tint is essentially standard on this model. The Vito wears dark glass well, it matches the factory tinted variants closely, and it keeps the interior out of sight when the van is parked on a street.

Bear in mind the low roof — this is a sitting-height van unless you fit a pop-top. Plan your layout around that before you commit to where the windows go, because window position and bed height interact more than people expect. A window at head height when you're sitting up in bed is worth far more than one you can only see out of standing.

Fitting

Bonded glazing with polyurethane adhesive, exactly as Mercedes glazes the window-van versions on the line. Cut the aperture, dress and prime the raw edge against corrosion, apply adhesive, set the glass and cure.

The 2016 Vito's panels have well-defined pressed guidelines that make marking out straightforward. The panes are a manageable size and weight — this is a comfortable one-person job for the side glass, though the door glass is easier with help.
